Why I Started Taking My Football Bets More Seriously (And You Should Too)

Learn why a more disciplined approach to football betting can help, from checking form and injuries to managing budgets, avoiding chasing losses and finding value.

I used to throw money at matches without thinking. Just pick a team I liked, put down 500 shillings, and hope for the best. Sometimes I'd win. Most times I didn't.

Then something changed last year around March. I lost 2,300 shillings in one weekend on matches I was "sure" about. Arsenal let me down (again), and I had this moment where I thought: why am I doing this? I wasn't even enjoying it anymore.

So I decided to treat betting online like I'd treat any other part of my budget. You know, actually pay attention. And honestly? Everything shifted.

The Problem With Gut Feelings

Gut feelings are terrible predictors. You watch a team play well once, and suddenly you're convinced they'll destroy everyone. But football doesn't work that way.

I started writing down every bet I placed. Date, teams, amount, outcome. After three weeks, I noticed I was betting on big teams way too often and ignoring the odds completely. Manchester United could be playing terribly, facing a team in great form, and I'd still back them because... well, because they're Manchester United.

That cost me maybe 4,500 shillings over those three weeks alone.

What Actually Worked For Me

I'm not saying I became some expert overnight. But I made a few changes that helped.

I stopped betting on every single match. Used to place 6 or 7 bets per weekend, now I do 2 or 3 max. I started checking head-to-head records before placing anything. I set a monthly limit of 3,000 shillings and stuck to it. Also started looking at team news because injuries matter way more than I thought.

The head-to-head thing was huge. Some teams just can't beat certain opponents, no matter what. I watched Tottenham lose to a mid-table side they hadn't beaten in 8 matches, and I'd bet on them anyway because "this time will be different." (Spoiler: it wasn't.)

The Stats I Actually Check Now

I'm not spending hours on this, maybe 15 minutes before I place a bet, but that's enough to make better decisions.

I look at recent form now, not just wins and losses, but how they won or lost. A team scraping 1-0 wins isn't the same as one dominating 3-0. Home and away records matter too. Some teams are completely different when travelling.

And injuries. Can't stress this enough. I once bet on Liverpool without checking they were missing 3 key defenders. They conceded 4 goals. I lost 800 shillings I could've kept if I'd just spent 90 seconds looking at the team sheet.

Why I Don't Chase Losses Anymore

My biggest problem before was chasing. Lose a bet on Saturday and place a bigger one on Sunday to "win it back." Lose that? Well, now you're down even more, making desperate decisions.

I did this back in June and lost 2,100 shillings in two days. But it taught me something: betting isn't about recovering losses. You can't control what happened yesterday. You can only make smarter choices today.

Now when I lose (and I still lose, obviously), I just accept it and move on. My monthly budget stays the same regardless. Some months I'm up 1,200 shillings. Others I break even. But I'm never chasing, and I sleep better because of it.

Finding Value Instead of Favourites

The biggest shift came when I stopped asking "who will win?" and started asking "where's the value?" Sometimes the favourite is priced correctly. Other times, you'll find teams at 2.80 odds that should be closer to 2.20, and that's where I focus now.

I've found smaller leagues and mid-tier matches often have better value than the Premier League. Everyone's betting on the big games, so the odds get tighter. Look at the Kenyan Premier League or Championship matches in England. The research takes longer, but the opportunities are there.

And you don't need to bet huge amounts to make it worthwhile. I placed 200 shillings on a match at 3.50 odds last month and won 700 shillings. Better than losing 1,000 on a favourite at 1.40, yeah?
